Description:

As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, it is important for us to recall that the USA is a wonderfully diverse nation, and our federal government is in sore need of more voices representing that diversity. Busboys and Poets prides itself on creating a space where politics, culture, and art intentionally collide, in order to come together over what unites us. As part of our continuing commitment to provide our community with opportunities to engage with emerging leaders at all levels, Busboys and Poets and Code Pink proudly present A Community Conversation with Ayanna Pressley, Congresswoman from Massachusett’s 7th District.

Congresswoman Pressley was the first African American woman elected to the Boston city council and the first elected to represent the 7th congressional district. She has a long history of working with leadership in the Democratic Party, and tackling issues often underrepresented on the legislative floor. While a member of the city council, she served on the Committee on Healthy Women, Families, and Communities, providing voices for the voiceless and helping to develop comprehensive sex education programs for the Boston public school system. She was reelected three times to that position before running for Congress in 2018, where she joined a brigade of first time female candidates.

As a member of Congress, her legislative work includes committees on civil rights, consumer protection, and diversity/inclusion. She has been a vocal champion of impeachment for Donald Trump, as well as Medicare For All, and the dissolution of ICE, among many other progressive issues. She is a fierce advocate for ending sexual violence, and has said “I have dedicated my life to combatting trauma in all forms.”

As a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, she has proven herself time and time again a forward thinking defender of society’s most vulnerable populations. We are fortunate to have the Congresswoman for this full-store event, where she will be taking questions from the audience as well as answering some pre-screened prompts from the moderator.

We hope you will join us and be inspired by Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley!
