At this year's commencement ceremony, two Morehouse professors hoisted the flag of the Democratic Republic of the Congo behind President Joe Biden while he gave the commencement address at Morehouse College. In the same week, The New York Times reported that the Biden Administration was on the verge of lifting sanctions on Israeli billionaire Dan Gertler, who made his billions from plundering the Congo. The D. R. Congo looms large whether it concerns global genocides, the great power scramble for critical materials to power the green energy transition, combating the climate crisis, or US foreign policy in Africa.
Busboys and Poets is honored to welcome esteemed activist and scholar Maurice Carney as the featured speaker. Maurice Carney is a co-founder and Executive Director of the Friends of the Congo. For decades, Friends of the Congo has been advocating for the dignity and inclusion of the Congolese civil society in all efforts for peace, democracy, food sovereignty, and climate justice and more.
