Description:

There are already excellent pathways to global nuclear disarmament, and excellent alternatives to fossil fuels. The obstacles to surviving these “twin existential threats to humanity” are misinformation, propaganda, and politicians corrupted by profiteering corporations. This is a handbook for campaigners on both issues to work together on treaties, divestment, boycotts, legislation, education, economic conversion, and more. Wallis works to debunk frauds, myths and distractions around global nuclear disarmament and fossil fuel divestment. It explores the idea of “feeding two birds with one scone” by converting massive amounts of money, brainpower and infrastructure from weapons of mass extinction to good jobs in evidence-based climate solutions. Full of well- documented facts and figures, tools and strategies, personal and political inspiration for swift, decisive action.

Timmon Wallis is joining us on the Busboys stage to share his newest book, with activist Medea Benjamin in conversation with him. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and Wallis will be signing following the program.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of WARHEADS AND WINDMILLS will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is in person and will not be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

Timmon Wallis is the national coordinator of the Warheads to Windmills Coalition. He holds a BA in Human Ecology and a PhD in Peace Studies. He has spent his life teaching, writing, directing organizations, and campaigning on peace and environmental issues in colleges, war zones, and with governments around the world. His book, Disarming the Nuclear Argument: The Truth About Nuclear Weapons, contributed to the negotiations for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, for which the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

Medea Benjamin is the co-founder of the women-led peace group CODEPINK. She is also co-founder of the human rights group Global Exchange, the Peace in Ukraine Coalition, Unfreeze Afghanistan (which advocates for returning the $7 billion of Afghan funds frozen in U.S. banks), ACERE: The Alliance for Cuba Engagement and Respect, and the Nobel Peace Prize for Cuban Doctors Campaign. Medea has been an advocate for social justice for 50 years. Described as “one of America’s most committed -- and most effective -- fighters for human rights” by New York Newsday, and “one of the high profile leaders of the peace movement” by the Los Angeles Times, she was one of 1,000 exemplary women from 140 countries nominated to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the millions of women who do the essential work of peace worldwide. She is the author of ten books, including Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control, Kingdom of the Unjust: Behind the U.S.-Saudi Connection, and Inside Iran: The Real History and Politics of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Her most recent book, coauthored with Nicolas J.S. Davies, is War in Ukraine: Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict.
