Description:

Rules for Whistleblowers is Stephen M. Kohn’s seventh book on whistleblowing and is a fully updated and expanded revision of The Whistleblower’s Handbook, the first-ever comprehensive consumer guide to exposing workplace wrongdoing.

Kohn’s thirty-five rules highlight the “traps” facing whistleblowers today and address how to file anonymous cases and qualify for multi-million-dollar rewards. Kohn carefully explains complex rules governing laws including the Dodd-Frank, IRS, and False Claims Acts, as well as detailed strategies for fighting retaliation. He also covers controversial issues such as taping, removing documents, and ignoring nondisclosure agreements.

Author Stephen Martin Kohn and Executive Director of the National Whistleblower Center, Suri Nelson, are joining us on the Busboys stage to share protocols for whistleblowing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and the author will be signing following the program.

This event is free and open to all. Our program begins at 6:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of RULES FOR WHISTLEBLOWERS will be available for purchase before and after the event. Please note that this event is IN PERSON and will NOT be livestreamed.

We ask that guests RSVP in order to receive direct updates about the event from Busboys and Poets Books

Stephen M. Kohn, founding partner at Kohn, Kohn, and Colapinto LLP, is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading qui tam and whistleblower attorneys. He won the largest ever individual tax whistleblower reward/qui tam payment for UBS whistleblower Bradley Birkenfeld ($104 million reward), and the largest ever reward ever paid to an individual under the related action provisions of the IRS, SEC and DOJ programs ($177 million).

He represents Danske Bank whistleblower Howard Wilkinson in the largest money laundering scandal in world history ($230 billion), and successfully represented Greek whistleblowers whose information triggered a $320 million sanction against Novartis drug company under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Disclosures made by Kohn’s clients have resulted in fraudsters paying over $10 billion in sanctions and restitution to victims of corporate crimes.

His record of winning whistleblower cases dates back to 1984, and he was peer-review rated by the National Law Journal as one of the 50-top plaintiff’s lawyers in the United States, the only whistleblower rights lawyer to achieve this distinction. His successful advocacy has resulted in landmark precedents in whistleblower and qui tam law.

Steve helped draft key whistleblower legislation and regulatory rules, including those incorporated into the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, Dodd-Frank Act, the IRS Qui Tam whistleblower amendments, and Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act. He played an instrumental role in drafting and advocating for the Money Laundering whistleblower law passed in December 2022.

He is the author of the first legal treatise on whistleblowing and is the world’s most published author on whistleblower protection. His most recent book is Rules for Whistleblowers: A Handbook for Doing What’s Right (Lyons Press 2023).

In 1988 he helped found the National Whistleblower Center, where is currently serves, pro bono, as Chairman of the Board. Steve also teaches an annual seminar on Whistleblower Law at the Northeastern University School of Law.

Siri Nelson is the Executive Director at National Whistleblower Center and an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern University School of Law. Nelson served as an Associate Attorney and Policy Counsel at Kohn, Kohn and Colapinto, the nation’s leading whistleblower law firm, where she worked closely with anonymous whistleblowers, legislators, and regulators.

Nelson was the recipient of the highly prestigious and competitive Estelle S. Kohn Memorial Fellowship awarded by Northeastern University School of Law and was elected to be the Commencement Speaker for her Class at Northeastern University School. She graduated summa cum laude from the College of New Rochelle, School of New Resources, with a B.A. in Liberal Arts focused on the Social Sciences.

Nelson has been published in Columbia’s Blue Sky Blog and The National Law Review, is quoted in stories in the Economist, Slate, and publications around the world. Ms. Nelson has presented at the World Justice Forum and represented NWC at the IX Summit of the Americas. She also serves as an Editor & Legislative Correspondent at Whistleblower Network News.
