The Impact of Mass Incarceration is a call home to victims of the criminal justice system who have been taken from their communities and brought back years later to an unrecognizable place without the proper reentry tools. More than 10 million arrests are made each year in the United States with an arrest made every three seconds. Within this statistic, fewer than 5 percent of these are for serious violent crimes (Vera Institute, 2019). Busboys and Poets strives to inform the public of why criminal justice reform is necessary as well as provide resources for those with a criminal record and allies in this fight to end mass incarceration. We also hope to provide victims the proper welcoming back home that they deserve.
Busboys and Poets, in collaboration with Justice Arts Coalition (JAC), are organizing an exhibition featuring the depth of creative vision, explored across mediums, of formerly and currently incarcerated artists. Creativity is My Freedom aims to demonstrate the numerous ways that creative practice allows us to transcend environment, thought, and mundanity to instead enter realms of imaginative freedom.
The exhibition will feature 40+ art works from the following artists:
Carole Alden, Danny Ashton, Rayfel Zumar Bell, Gregory Bolden, Harry Ellis, Gary Harrell, Brian Hindson, Will Livingston, Robert Odom, Marcus Pettiford, Carlos Walker and John Zenc
Creativity is My Freedom will be displayed at Busboys and Poets, Takoma from July 30, 2023 thru January 9, 2023. The opening reception will be August 11th, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm.
