Join us for the grand opening of Sharps & Flats DC’s first public piano! The ribbon cutting for the piano, painted by GABE♡ a.k.a. Ratbaziod, will take place in the Barry Room at Busboys and Poets - Anacostia, the piano’s new permanent home, on April 15th at 3:30 PM EST.
Sharps & Flats DC is the DMV’s new public piano foundation focused on refurbishing and reviving second-hand pianos for the local community. We aim to create ethical, sustainable, and accessible spaces for the public to rejoice in music.
The schedule of events for the grand opening are as follows:
- An introductory speech and original piano composition from Sharps & Flats DC founder, pianist, and filmmaker Iman Blackwell.
- Speeches from Sharps & Flats DC members Hailey Wharram and Elijah Ward.
- 3 guest pianist performances to kick off our open-mic.
- An informal piano open-mic session where anyone, regardless of piano experience, is encouraged to play.
While this is a free event, we encourage those willing and able to donate to Sharps & Flats DC, as donations are currently the sole source of funds supporting the maintenance and addition of new public pianos across the DMV area. Sharps & Flats DC is not presently registered as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, but plans to seek non-profit status in the future.
You can donate at Sharps & Flats DC’s GoFundMe link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/sharpsandflats
and follow them @sharpsandflatsdc on Instagram. You can also check out and support the work of GABE♡, the piano artist, here at her website: https://www.ratbaziod.com/

After the grand opening, feel free to come play the piano at Busboys and Poets - Anacostia, open 7 days a week, when the event space is not being used.
Thank you for your support! We look forward to jamming with you on April 15th!
