Description:

The A.C.T.O.R. (A Continuing Talk on Race) open discussion series is hosted by Busboys and Poets as a community service. It provides the opportunity for people to come together and speak openly and honestly about issues of race. The intent is that each person walks away from the discussion feeling something: challenged, educated, uncomfortable, enlightened, refreshed, reassured and hopefully inspired and moved to action! Each month there is a new topic for discussion.

This month's topic: Screening of Becoming Free

Becoming Free is a short documentary film that explores the reentry experience of three young people in the District of Columbia as they seek to break the cycle of poverty, violence and incarceration through entrepreneurship. But they are always walking the “thin line” that can lead back to prison with the smallest misstep or along a new path to the future.

About the Filmmaker:

Kristin Adair is a Washington, DC-based documentary filmmaker and multimedia artist. She is deeply committed to collaborative storytelling that amplifies the voices of those impacted by the criminal justice system. She brings her legal background into her work as a storyteller by advocating directly for the interests of men and women incarcerated as juveniles and young adults in DC and beyond. She has produced a documentary film and multimedia project, Becoming Free, which looks intimately at the experience of coming home from prison after years or decades behind bars during the critical transition from youth to adulthood. Kristin is partnering with current and formerly incarcerated people to launch a new collaborative multimedia production company called Unchained Media Collective.

Kristin is one of 8 artists selected for the 2017-2018 inaugural cohort of the Halcyon Arts Lab, a fellowship program for artists working at the intersection of creativity and social impact. She received her MA in New Media Photojournalism from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at the George Washington University in 2017. Previously she received her BS in Foreign Service from Georgetown University in 2002 and her JD from the George Washington University in 2006.

Free and open to all.

A.C.T.O.R. is held on the first Sunday of every month at Busboys and Poets 14th & V from 5:00 PM-7:00 pm.
