Busboys and Poets welcomes author Dr. Reza Aslan to sign and discuss his new book, Zealot:The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a provocative and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth.
In Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth internationally acclaimed writer and scholar of religions Reza Aslan sifts through centuries of mythmaking and sheds new light on one of history’s most enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of Jewish prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs wandered through the Holy Land, bearing messages from God. This was the age of zealotry—a fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews.
Dr. Reza Aslan’s bachelor’s degree is in religious studies, with an emphasis on scripture and traditions (which at Santa Clara University means the New Testament). His minor was in biblical Greek. He has a master of theological studies degree from Harvard University, in world religions, and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the sociology of religions. UCSB’s doctoral program is an interdisciplinary one that draws from religion, history, philosophy, and sociology, among other fields. Aslan’s doctorate in the sociology of religions encompasses expertise in the history of religion. Reza also has a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. You may also recognize him from his recent interview with Fox News religion reporter Lauren Green that quickly went viral after she repeatedly questioned him as to why a Muslim would write a book about Jesus.
Praise for Zealot:
“A well-researched, readable biography of Jesus of Nazareth… Iranian-born Aslan has made the study of religion his life’s work, and it shows. After explaining the origins and evolution of Islam, the author now turns to Christianity and its unlikely beginnings… Why has Christianity taken hold and flourished? This book will give you the answers in the simplest, most straightforward, comprehensible manner.” --Kirkus Review
“Aslan…offers a compelling argument for a fresh look at the Nazarene, focusing on how Jesus the man evolved into Jesus the Christ. Approaching the subject from a purely academic perspective, the author parts an important curtain that has long hidden from view the man Jesus… Compulsively readable and written at a popular level, this superb work is highly recommended.” --Publisher’s Weekly
“A bold, powerfully argued revisioning of the most consequential life ever lived.” – Lawrence Wright, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief
“In Zealot, Reza Aslan…does for religious history what Bertholt Brecht did for playwriting. Aslan rips Jesus out of all the contexts we thought he belonged in and hold him forth as someone entirely new. This is Jesus as a passionate Jew, a violent revolutionary, a fanatical ideologue, an odd and scary and extraordinarily interesting man.” – Judith Shulevitz, author of The Sabbath World
