Screening of Howard Zinn Films
All Day (Cullen Room) - Join us for an all day screening of Howard Zinn's : You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train and The People Speak.
{THE PEOPLE SPEAK} is a documentary film inspired by the books, "A People's History of the United States" and "Voices of a People's History" which chronicles the lives and experiences of ordinary Americans who, through their words and actions, changed the course of our history. Using dramatic and musical performances of the letters, diaries and speeches of everyday Americans, THE PEOPLE SPEAK gives voice to those who spoke up for social change throughout U.S. history, forging a nation from the bottom up with their insistence on equality and justice. This film takes us on a journey from the founding of our country to the civil rights movement, all the way up through today. (100 Minutes)
{YOU CAN'T BE NEUTRAL ON A MOVING TRAIN} Following his early days as a shipyard labor organizer and bombardier in World War II, Zinn became an academic rebel and leader of civil disobedience in a time of institutionalized racism and war. His influential writings shine light on and being voice to factory workers, immigrant laborers, African Americans, Native Americans and the working poor. 78 Minutes Click here to add to your calendar |

Author Event, Ytasha Womack
6:30 PM (Cullen Room) - Author Ytasha Womack discusses and signs her new book, "Post Black: How a New Generation Is Redefining African American Identity". - As a young journalist covering black life at large, author Ytasha L. Womack was caught unaware when she found herself straddling black culture’s rarely acknowledged generation gaps and cultural divides. Traditional images show blacks unified culturally, politically, and socially, united by race at venues such as churches and community meetings. But in the “post black” era, even though individuals define themselves first as black, they do not necessarily define themselves by tradition as much as by personal interests, points of view, and lifestyle. In "Post Black: How a New Generation Is Redefining African American Identity," Womack takes a fresh look at dynamics shaping the lives of contemporary African Americans. -- Event is cosponsored by Patriot Stategies and the Young Black Womans Forum. Free and open to the public. Book available for purchase at Busboys and Poets, 5th & K Click here to add to your calendar |
